In Times of Trouble

Romans 8:35 asks a question that is very relevant for these
hard times. The New Living Translation
reads "Does it mean Christ no longer loves us if we have trouble or
calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or
threatened with death?"
We often find it hard to believe that God still loves us
when we are going through difficulties not of our making. There are some who might automatically answer
that Christ never stops loving us. But most of us would have to admit that,
deep down, we wonder if Christ really does love us. After all, how can he
love us and still allow this to happen?

Why No Awe and Wonder?

At LifeQuest we've been examining Worship. It has been a wonderful journey so far and we have discovered a lot about God, ourselves, and our relationship with Him. One of the things we talked about is how, in the Scriptures, an encounter with God always resulted in Awe and Wonder. Awe and Wonder. We were made to experience Awe and Wonder. Humans are the only ones on earth that can stand in awe and wonder amazed by a sunset over the Ocean or the snow on the peaks of a mountain range or the emotions stirred up by a beautiful piece of music. We experience Awe and Wonder because God formed us to be in relationship with Him and to be able to experience His presence. Awe and Wonder can produce some very meaningful moments in our lives. So, in one of our services I asked the question, Where do you go when you want to experience awe and wonder? There were a wide variety of answers. Some said the beach. Others said the mountains or...

Who Has A Hold of Whom?

Alex, my grandson, had his first overnight stay at Pap-pap's and Meemaw's the other day. It was a great time. On the afternoon of the first day, Pam and I needed to get some groceries and we took Alex with us. As we got out of the car, we told Alex that we needed to hold hands so we could safely to walk across the parking lot. Alex reached up and grabbed my index finger. In the meantime I tried to grasp his hand so I would have better control if something happened. But Alex pulled his hand out of mind and grabbed my finger again. So we walked across the lot with him holding my finger and me thinking that if I needed to catch him if he fell or grab him if I needed to quickly move him, I wouldn't be able to do it very well.

Christian Artists Night goodies!!!

We have some new goodies up in the gallery, with possibly more coming down later. That's right, the pictures from CAN are up, and two videos from CAN are also available, including one song each from Four of Three and Eddy's band. Here's the fun part, though, so listen up. I've created the videos in two different formats: one is a flash based video, the other is a windows media video. Flash is more universal, and WMV is more portable (that is, you can download it and play it easier) so, depending on which you perfer, I'll pick that format and convert the other video to it as well. Check out the videos by clicking read more! For all of the stuff from the last CAN, just go to the gallery album.
Are the Scriptures Authoritative?

One of the questions that is often asked is how can a book as ancient (and some would say archaic) as the Bible be an authority in how I should live my life in my world today?

"How Do You Define Success?"

Jesus asked a question in Mark 8:36 which I find to be very challenging to the way I live. He asked, And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? Most of us would consider the second question rhetorical. If we take the time to think about it and weight the worth of our souls, most, if not all, would say nothing is worth risking my soul. Yet for so many of us, we risk it every day.

"Following At A Distance"

Recently I was reading the story about Peter's denial of Jesus Christ. There was a phrase that caught my attention. The Bible says that Peter followed Jesus from a distance. I thought about that. Now before you think I'm going to go bashing Peter, give me a minute. What I was thinking about was why Peter followed Jesus from a distance. His concerns were real. His fears justified. He loved Jesus with all his heart, but he saw the potential for pain, suffering, and judgment if he got too close. The problem was not his thinking or his heart. The problem was his faith. Did he still trust Jesus to take care of him even when it didn't appear that Jesus could take care of himself? Once again Peter was out of the boat (he still followed Jesus when others had completely left), in the storm of his life (with everyone around talking about the arrest and possible execution of Jesus), and had his eyes focused on the situation instead of...

God has faith in you!

Hi Everyone, Did you ever stop to thing about the fact that God has faith in you? Rob Bell, in his book Velvet Elvis , writes I have been told that I need to believe in Jesus. Which is a good thing. But what I am learning is that Jesus believes in me. I have been told that I need to have faith in God. Which is a good thing. But what I am learning is that God has faith in me. This is a nice sentiment, but the fact that Rob Bell wrote it doesn't necessarily make it true. However, look what the scriptures have to say. John 14:12. I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works ... Ephesians 2:10. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. 2 Peter 1:3. By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received...

Why do church-- celebration! (Part 2)

Tonight, we'll be going back over the topic of the church as a place of celebration. I don't know about anyone else, but church as a place of celebration is a bit... counter-intuitive. Think about it. If you tell any guy (particularly during football season) that they have a choice of going to church or--doing pretty much anything else, actually--they will inevitably choose that something else.
