Hmmm.... *finger hovers over the ban button* ...nah... You did, however, give me an idea for a new discussion board.

I despise that show. I feel sorry for some people that try...

Me? I like the show. It's entertaining and it doesn't require a simulated act of violence (unless you consider "butchering a song" violence). And it has discovered some great talent and given opportunities to those who probably would never have had a chance. I think the number of grammys, tonys, and oscars coming from people who have been on the show is impressive.

It's called American Idol, folks. Not America's Best Singer. Not America's Best Musician. Not America's Most Musically Gifted. It's American Idol.
Here is the Merriam-Webster online definition of the word "idol":
1: a representation or symbol of an object of worship; broadly : a false God 2 a: a likeness of something bobsolete : pretender, impostor 3: a form or appearance visible but without substance <an enchanted phantom, a lifeless idol ? P. B. Shelley> 4: an object of extreme devotion <a movie idol>; also : ideal 2 5: a false conception : fallacy
So, American Idol is what it is, what it has always been, and what it wants to be. You don't have to like it, but it is what it is.
It is not about music, talent, intelligence, etc. It is about image (though the idol winners do NOT all look the same and do NOT all sing the same style).

It is called American Fallacy. One of the definitions of Idol is fallacy/false. It's the same thing. They have boldly stated several times on the show that it's not just about singing- it's the "whole package". That's what an idol is and that's why they call it that. They don't pretend to be about the music. I'm not particularly a fan (I don't watch it unless I'm at the meeting and it's on- I don't watch it at home), but it's been the number 1 show since it began. Sad, maybe, but it's the truth.

Ouch! I don't know, a lot of people don't think their votes count on American Idol, either, particularly when their favorite gets voted off.

I don't vote on A.I.; I just enjoy watching it. And I like Simon...I think he's mean, but it's funny. And there are just too many people that go to the auditions that should never have been allowed to get on TV singing...they almost (i said almost!) deserve the comments they get. By the way, at least we live in Florida...we get to vote twice! haha
