After about six months, they need shots, after about one year they need to be "fixed,? and have a monthly flea treatment.  My 18-year-old cat has no idea what fleas are, because we do this every month.  Cats are good about keeping clean, but if going in and out doors, they get into stuff, and momma kitties will bring you gifts, frequently dead mice.  So if you have an infant in the house keep the cat in, or keep the cat out, either way works.  My 18 year old cat is an indoor cat, we have a stray that adopted us, it will go nuts if kept in, so it comes and goes.  Check with a pediatrician about cat hair, dander etc.  Then decide if the kitty should be an indoor or an outdoor kitty. Shari: Thanks!

TheDude:  Too funny with those pictures!!

Brandy:  One, I know... Cry
Two, My parents know a lady that will pay to have her spayed, therefore, to me, it's free!
Three, I used to be a dog person, but now I prefer cats.  I actually do like big dogs alot...labs, rhodesian (sp?) ridgebacks, chows, german shepards, etc.  But I still prefer cats.

Roy:  that's great!  But NO DOGS!!  They aren't in the running!  Wink

And unfortunately, the mommy kitty moved the kittens today while I was at the gym  Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry
But, now that I have poor John talked into buying a kitty, I still get one.  I'm going to be keeping my eyes open for this one, but just in case, let me know if anyone has any to offer!

Leah has a cat- Pete- and he is the best cat ever! I say this because, well, he acts more the like their dalmatians than an actual cat. He greets you at the door. As soon as you sit down, he'll come and sit on your lap- and make his rounds to everyone else sitting down. And, he'll come to you when you call his name (he even meows in response when you call him- as if he's letting you know he's coming). He's a manx cat and Leah says that she's read Manx cats are very friendly.

Warning, though: Pete and Jen got Isabelle because she was supposed to be a friendly cat........

Isabelle is an extremely friendly cat!  You see Brandy, she knows your a dog person.  That doesn't sit well with her... And Michelle doesn't already have a cat.  In Isabelle's opinion, there should be no discussion.  You get a cat, no questions asked!!

You see, there are logical explanations for her taking swipes at both of you.  I'm afraid now, Brandy, Isabelle may read this post and see that you do not think she is the best cat ever and that you even speak of a cat acting like a DOG!!!

You have forced me to give her multiple treats to calm her down.

Yeah, I have to give her multiple treats, too- to distract her from taking a swipe at me while I feed her, as she rolls around in front of me, acting like she wants me to pet her. So deceiving. We had made such strides to be friends...

I thought about a bunny, but i've heard they are not good to own with small children.  I watched Shane chase after poor Toki (Tim and Susan's bunny)- Toki could barely escape him!!  I do love bunnies though!!

And I did nothing to Ms. Isabelle...she just turned.  The first time I cat-sat we were great friends, and the second time, well, let's just say it wasn't pretty. Wink

Nooooo... small children and bunnies are fine together. I had my first bunny when my sister was about Shane's age, and she did just fine with the little critter.

My sister and I had bunnies. I was around 10 and 11, so my sister was 6/7. They were cute and sweet, but we left them outside in cages. We (or should I say I, since I took care of both of them) would take them out everyday and hold them and love on them. The only complaint I had was that they would pee on me. And you think, it's a small animal, it shouldn't be that bad, right? Not so, my friends. Not so. For little critters, they have big, strong bladders!  Embarrassed
