I had a weird dream last night, and I thought it would be interesting to discuss: what does it mean to you to be alive? I'm not looking for biological definitions here--any of us can look that up on wikipedia and yawn. No, I mean to you, personally, what does it mean to be alive? Smiley Or, when do you feel most alive? Sorry, I can't tell you about the dream--it's already fading from memory.

Light dispels the darkness

Alive - An inner connection with my surroundings to include: people, plants, animals, air, minerals.

It is a self realization that this may or may not be real at all.  (ie.  How do you know this is real? It could be this is your dream and the dream you had was the actual reality)  I am alive to question and discover my surroundings and the mechanisms that put me here.

Analyzing my reactions to various inputs, discovering "feelings" and sensations. I am an observer of things.  It is through my observations, connections, feelings, and analyzing that I become alive.

I feel most alive when I can totally immerse myself in whatever I am doing, but yet be aware that I and my surroundings are all interconnected with something else.

I feel most alive when I'm surrounded by nature...mountains, crashing waves, lightning storm...possibly because I sense God easily in those places.  Or when I am with those that I love and that I know love me.  Put the two together and it's even better!

What about you, Roy?  You didn't answer your own question.  Wink

Haha fair enough!

I feel most alive when I'm solving a puzzle or unraveling a mystery. Nature often comes at a close second, whenever I actually stop and pay attention to it that is.

Conquering a fear can make one feel alive. And when I stand at the edge of the sand and the ocean, I feel more alive. I felt this way moreso when I was in CA this summer. The waves were pretty big and standing at the edge of the water, realizing how small I am. I had no control over those waves. While one was crashing over my feet, I could feel the one before it pull me in (the under-toe). My goal is to conquer my fear and dive into those waves next time...

I feel most alive during three different times.

The first when I'm in bed with my arms around my wife; feeling her warmth against my body; feeling her breath rasei and lower my arm, and tickle the haires on my other arm as she breaths out; hearing her heart beat.

The second is when I'm in my lab. When I get to see the concepts that I've leanred about become a reality. I feel alive as I put together a device that has never existed before, but because physics and mathmatics say so, it functions. I feel alive as I put somethign together and it doesn't work at first, but it begans to work as I tinker with it.

The third is when I'm alone with God. When everything else in the universe turns off and all I can feel is Him; when the sounds and sights and feelings one my body don't seem real anymore. I feel alive when I have no objectives, no reasons, no goals, nowhere to be, no one to see; but I just have Him. He has me.

On a different note -

I feel least alive when watching TV or playing a video game. They help me relax, but give nothing to my 'soul.'

Or, when I've been working on the smae homework problem for the past four days and am no closer to an answer.

A child recently asked me what eight times four is. I thought about it for a while. I put together some experiments. I ran some tests. I searched through numerous published articles on number theory.
I then came back to the child and responded, "What's a 'four'?"

I would have to say that I feel most alive when connecting deep with another's soul. Of course my husband is on the top of that list, but any discussion that really brings out my deepest emotions connecting to someone else who is spending their precious moments with me.

Second of course would be when I am dancing free. This doesn't happen as often as I would like anymore, because I am often self-conscious or performing, but when I really let go. This is also when I usually feel closest to God- which gave me this life and joy of dancing.

I am most alive when ...

I have discovered a new fact or truth in my searching.  I love it when there is something in the Scriptures that I had not realized before and suddenly it comes "alive".

I hear my grandson laugh ...

I experience wonder ... in a song, a book, a movie, a moment, scenic grandeur, microscopic beauty, just about anything.

I worship with others.  There is nothing more meaningful to me than when I experience the manifest presence of God in times of corporate worship.

I have said or done something to add to the quality of the day for another person.

Pam says she loves me.

I am alone, all is silent, and I hear the still small voice of the Spirit whispering deep within me.

I reflect what makes me feel alive.  Like right now.
