I'll be going. Bill Maher is one of my favorite comedians. If you can't laugh at yourself, then what else is there left?

I've actually thought about going to see it. Just to see where he's coming from. I've read an article or 2 on it, and it's presented as his view of the ridiculousness (still not sure if this is a real word) of religion. (I haven't looked at this clip yet).

I am sure that he is going to be poking fun at both himself and religions. Since he is the main character, I feel safe that he will have less slaps at himself then about religious thoughts.
Comedy is probably one of the best ways to look at how we see ourselves. Remember some of the greatest comedic routines are about the silliness of our language and culture. Gallagher has a tremendous way of throwing it all back in our face.
If you don't take it too seriously, but go for entertainment and maybe a "oh wow" is that how "that" looks to others. It may bring about tremendous growth in religions and interactions with others.

Nah, odds are some small fraction of the church will protest this movie, be represented as being the entirety of the church, and the only people that will watch it are the same ones that bought the The God Delusion.

Actually, I didn't buy it. It was given to me by a friend. I don't see why religious people wouldn't want to watch this. Even as a previously devout conservative I went to see Fahrenheit 9/11 when it came out just out of morbid curiosity.

Danny, you're not most people. Generally, people don't like watching things that present them with a point of view different from their own. It makes them scared and angry. My hope is that Paul would be right--that people would watch that and seriously consider the fact that their behavior may actually by pushing people away from Christ rather than towards him. If I had walked into a church that had some of the insanity going on that I've seen in the preview trailers, (and is well documented elsewhere I might add) as a near-atheist, I would have walked away from Christianity for good. (though to give you background... I was in a place in my life where if I found that an intelligent, thinking person could believe in God and be a Christian, then I would pursue God and Christianity. If I found that faith was a thing for those that don't think or don't want to think... I would be in a different place now. Fwiw, one of the first people I met when I visited a church with a friend all those years ago, was Bruce.) I'm not saying that people should change the way they worship per se, just have more... discretion, I guess. Quite honestly, I'm not sure what the answer would be, but I think that valuing the people outside the church equally with those inside the church is the answer. "I will do things the way that I want, and everyone else be damned" isn't quite the right attitude, ya know?

isn't equally stupid to judge the way other people worship? If said worship is unethical or harmful then it would be stupid not to.

From what I've read about it, this movie is about organized religion as a whole, not just Christianity. It targets 3 religions. I think the other 2 are the Jewish and Muslim faiths (Maher was raised Catholic and found out in his teens that his mother was Jewish). I think he was quoted as saying it did not include Buddhism or Hinduism because time and money did not allow for it this time around.
Yes, it's true this will probably be boycotted by the church. And quite possibly by the other religious groups targeted. And there are many reason for it. And while it may be that some don't want to hear others' viewpoints, they also don't want people making fun of them for believing what they believe.
Daniel, how recently were you a "devout conservative?" Farenheit 911 didn't come out that long ago. Just curious.

Oh. That's pretty recent. I guess I keep forgetting how old you are, too. You're the young one on the forums. Well, Moosemaster technically is, but he's been MIA for awhile.

This movie obviously supports that hypothesis. That everyone involved is a moron? I can support that.
