I saw a shirt that said "Relax, God is in control."  Is he?  It has become a common belief among Christians to tell each other that everything is ok because ?God has everything under control.  I don't believe he is.  I think God is a gentleman and allows us to make our own decisions, whether he agrees with them or not.  Any thoughts?

Hmm...my first instinct is to say, "yes."  But mostly because, like you say, it's become common to say that.  I think we have "free will" and can choose what to do.  I do think that he can turn things to our benefit though.  Interesting thought Smiley  I'll think more on this!

What does being in control really mean may be the real question.  If one starts an action, then are they in control.  If they monitor the action, are they in control.  If they manipulate the action are they in control. If they only observe the action are they in control. If they control every action then they are in control.

Is the saying just a way to avoid responsibility?  It is always easier to blame someone else for the problems then it is for us to accept that we are the cause and also the answer.

Only at formal affairs.

Dallas Willard once wrote, "I believe my God is big enough to allow me to have control without losing control." (slightly paraphrased).  Is that possilbe?

God is in control because God created everything, and with this creation of matter and energy things were set in motion, never to cease.

Every cause has an effect, and since God was first cause, he ultimately spun existence in a particular manner to ensure all the experiences in all lives occurred how they should occur not out of desire, but out of useless necessity.

A tops function is to spin, there is no purpose. As the universe spins, the spinner (God) knew exactly how it would spin (being omniscient and all), so he gave it the proper amount of velocity to ensure a proper arbitrary amount of happiness and tragedy would occur in your life. Don't worry though, because there's nothing you can do about it anyway.

I see that you are a believer in chaos theory, mr. anxiety.

I think of God as a scientist; we are the lab rats and the universe is a giant re-constructable maze. We can choose which path to take, but only within the confines of the maze's walls. The only flaw I can think of in this analogy (from my own personal belief) is that the rats can talk and petition for a wall to be moved.

A child recently asked me what eight times four is. I thought about it for a while. I put together some experiments. I ran some tests. I searched through numerous published articles on number theory.
I then came back to the child and responded, "What's a 'four'?"

Technically, the Universe is constantly expanding outwards, and has no spin to it. police

Engineer... my only question is... what's the cheese at the end of the maze???
