Spiritual Growth

Welcome to our little corner devoted to spiritual Growth! Permit me to tell you a little bit of what goes on in this section:

  • Bruce's Corner: This section exists entirely on the forum, and it is devoted to giving Bruce a place where he can post sermon notes, have discussions on various topics, articles, lessons, etc.
  • Daily Devotionals: A section that draws several daily devotionals from other websites for you to enjoy. If you have any suggestions of good daily devotional websites that have an RSS feed, e-mail the webmaster!
  • Spiritual Practices: The word is likened to a sword, and here we have materials that will help you in the process of honing it's blade. Everything from articles by theologians, to practical advice for studying your Bible, or spending time in prayer can be found here.
  • Search the Bible: provided by Bible Gateway, this section gives you an interface for searching the Bible in many different translations.
  • Educational Links: Links to other websites that have useful material for contributing to your spiritual growth.
That's pretty much it! I hope you find everything here useful. Always remember, if you have a good idea for something that can be added to this section, then by all means send an e-mail to Bruce or the webmaster.

Hi Everyone,

You are immortal.  Many of us probably already "know" this, but few of us "live" like it is true.  Everything about our world tries to convince us of our mortality.  We talk about life expectancy, mortality rates, buy life insurance, make lists of what we want to do "before we die", and even "eat, drink, and be merry" for we are but mortals.  The result is that everything we do, everything we experience, everything we strive to accomplish is from the perspective of the fact that we are mortal.  Let's make the most of today for it is one less day to live.  Our lives become focused on surviving and ensuring a quality of life.  We become myopic.  And the end of our tunnel vision is a grave.  We technically know that that is not true, but we live as if it is.

Last Saturday (I almost wrote Friday), March 10th, I talked about a "rhythm of life" that  unifies our lives into a sacred whole, that promotes the transforming of our nature to be more like Christ's, and that empowers us to reach out to those around us who are lost and in need of Christ's love and forgiveness.  I will be sharing more on this in the near future, but I want to challenge our hearts today to begin the journey now.  The bottom line is that for many of us our "rhythm of life" not only does not enhance our spiritual lives, but actually hinders it.  If
we are going to experience God the way we desire, then we must start by changing the way we live life.

I read a short quote the other day.  "Seize from every moment its unique novelty, and do not prepare your joys."  The whole quote is good, and also fairly typical.  You know, SEIZE THE DAY and all.  But the part that really impacted me was "do not prepare your joys."  Cause this is exactly what we always do.  We plan evenings out, times with friends, vacations, weekends off, going to movies, parties, and etc.  And each one of these are planned with the idea that this is going to be a time of joy.  There is nothing wrong with that in itself.  But it occurs to me that when we define certain times to be times of joy, then we are automatically defining the rest of our time as being joyless.  By preparing my times of joy, I may be missing out on the joys in the current moments.  Have you ever looked forward to a time with such anticipation that the time leading up to it almost seemed to drag?  Then you know what I am talking about.  What if instead we experienced our joy in each moment as it happens?
