Hi Everyone,
You are immortal. Many of us probably already "know" this, but few of
us "live" like it is true. Everything about our world tries to
convince us of our mortality. We talk about life expectancy, mortality
rates, buy life insurance, make lists of what we want to do "before we
die", and even "eat, drink, and be merry" for we are but mortals. The
result is that everything we do, everything we experience, everything
we strive to accomplish is from the perspective of the fact that we are
mortal. Let's make the most of today for it is one less day to live.
Our lives become focused on surviving and ensuring a quality of life.
We become myopic. And the end of our tunnel vision is a grave. We
technically know that that is not true, but we live as if it is.
Jesus warned about this in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). Back
in his culture, the "mortal outlook" resulted in a "survival"
mentality. All of life was spent ensuring there was enough to live on,
and perhaps, if you were blessed, a little to set aside. In chapter 6,
Jesus' tells them that living life like this was robbing them of the
life they could have. He told them to not worry about what they had to
eat, what they had to wear, or whether they had shelter or not. He
told them that having "a little to set aside" in this life didn't mean
half as much as having "a little to set aside" for the rest of
eternity. He told them to not get focused on living this life, but
instead to focus on living for eternity, on living for the Kingdom. He
reminded them that when they lived with Eternity in mind then life
today becomes meaningful and what we were really looking for anyway.
You are immortal. Eternity is your destiny. How does this change your
perspective on how to live today? When you got up this morning, did
you wake wondering how you would survive another day, or did you wonder
how this day might change eternity for you or someone around you? When
you choose to react to that irritating situation, did you respond
thinking only about the moment or did you respond based on how eternity
would be affected? When you looked into the eyes of another person,
did you see an interruption to your getting through this day or did you
see an opportunity to impact an eternal destination? When you decided
to indulge yourself a little, was it to please your mortal body or your
immortal soul? This is what we mean when we talk about "sacred
living". It removes the veneer of the mundane for our day-to-day lives
and let's the divine shine through. How's your day? How's your
eternity? You are immortal.
This Saturday night we will be looking at how Faith can help us live
when we don't understand what is going on in our lives. Paul said that
we see "through a glass darkly." But he also said that we can always
count on Faith, Hope, and Love. This next three weeks, as we prepare
for our Easter celebration, we will be discussing hour the Cross keeps
us on track when we don't know what track we are on. I hope I can see
you there. Please remember that we start at 6:00 PM. Also we have
nursery care provided, as well as WeeQuest (for preschool children) and
KidQuest (for elementary kids). Afterwards, please feel free to join
us for refreshments, fellowship, and an opportunity to discuss any
questions you may have about the service topic.
A couple of other quick reminders:
- Special celebration on Easter Weekend with Egg Hunt on Saturday
morning for the children (9-11), and services on both Saturday night at
6:00 PM and Sunday at 10:30 PM.
- Christian Artist Night on April 21st.
- Dangerous Questions Night on April 14th.
Together we can ... ... ...
Live The Life,
Bruce
