Hi Everyone, I wasn't going to write anything this week. I have to catch a plane this afternoon, and I won't be back until late Friday night. So I also have to get most of my message for Saturday done today. But somehow I just couldn't leave without writing something. So here is a short (I hope) devotional about something that's been on my heart.
There are two verses that have a lot of meaning for me. The first is "Jesus wept" (John 11:35). The second is "For the Lord delights in his people (Psalm 149:4). God, in His Sovereignty and Love, emotionally attached Himself to our lives. He weeps, and He takes delight. Hebrews 4:15 tells us that God is affected by our lives. The Greek word used in this verse is sumpatheo from which we get the word sympathetic. The literal translation is "to be affected with the same feeling as another". This has two important connotations for me. The first is that God does not hold Himself remote from my life. He laughs with me, cries with me, enjoys with me, and loves with me. He is very personal. He cares. And He is involved. It is comforting to know that even when I am alone, I do not cry alone. That when I am emotional moved by something God has done or is doing, He takes pleasure in my reaction. In other words, it is an intimate relationship. I desire that more than anything else. The second is that when I am willing to join others in their sorrow or joy, then I am imitating my Lord, becoming more like him. If Christ is willing to engage in our emotional lives, then how can I not and still say that I am trying to be like Him? Often, when sharing the emotions of others, I experience the closest presence of my Lord. It makes life real for me. How about you? Do you feel God's intimacy in your life? Are you willing to allow your heart to be touched by the emotions of others? I hope you will take some time to meditate on these scriptures and think about the concepts I have shared. I love you guys. Please forgive my grammatical and spelling errors. I tried to catch them all, but really am rushed. However, I'm glad I took the time. For a few minutes today, I felt like our hearts were connected through God as we discussed His relationship with us. My greatest desire for us is that, as we come together and draw close to the Father, we will all experience the blessedness of ... ... ... Living The Life, Bruce
